What Happens During an Ayahuasca Ceremony?

An ayahuasca ceremony does not follow one standard format. Every centre and facilitator works differently. The main differences are in the way participants are guided, how safety is approached and the space you are given to experience your own process.

Read how our ceremony weekends work and what you can expect.

One weekend - two ceremonies

An ayahuasca ceremony is a guided setting in which participants drink ayahuasca to explore inner processes, emotions and patterns. It requires preparation, safe guidance and integration afterwards.

With us, you take part in two ceremonies. We work with small groups, creating calm and space for personal attention. During the ceremonies, we support you through our presence, music, singing and additional focus exercises.

What you experience during the ceremonies is explored further during group sharing. This can help you understand what lies beneath your thoughts and behaviour, and how this shows up in your daily life.

How we work

Before the ceremony: intake and preparation

Our first contact is an introductory call to explore whether an ayahuasca ceremony is suitable for you.

  • Introduction with Carlijn
  • Health screening (medication, mental and physical health)
  • Medication check (possible interactions with ayahuasca)
  • Intention (what would you like to explore and what have you experienced?)
  • Space for questions

Once you decide to participate, you will receive all practical information and guidance on how to prepare.

During the ceremonies

The opening

You arrive at the location on Friday afternoon and we first show you around the accommodation. We then come together for an introduction, where we explain the ceremony, practical arrangements and the structure of the weekend.

During the ceremony, each participant has their own mattress and personal space in the ceremony room.

We open together in a circle with a moment of stillness and an opening song, accompanied by guitar or piano.

In the evening we drink ayahuasca. The dosage is carefully adjusted based on your experience, sensitivity and physical response.

The effects usually become noticeable within 20 to 45 minutes. A ceremony lasts around six hours, with the strongest effects often occurring after about an hour and a half.

Halfway through the ceremony, we offer a second drinking round. Together, we consider whether this is right for you. Many participants find that the second round allows them to go deeper into their process and emotions.

Music and silence are an important part of the ceremony. Sound can help bring emotions, tension and memories closer to the surface, while silence creates space to stay with your own experience.

We work with live singing, guitar, piano, percussion and carefully selected music.

The music follows the moment and what is happening within the group.

During ayahuasca, emotions such as sadness, fear, relief or tenderness can come to the surface. Physical reactions are also common.

These may include crying, yawning, shaking, needing to use the toilet, nausea or vomiting. Everyone experiences this differently.

Many people experience these reactions afterwards as a sense of release or relief.

We remain present and close throughout the ceremony. We trust that insights and unresolved experiences can come to the surface when you feel safe enough.

We know that a process needs space to unfold. For this reason, we work with very little physical contact, while staying attentive through our presence, music, singing or a few supportive words when needed.

Having the space to fully experience your own process can help build trust and a greater sense of autonomy.

After around six hours, we close the ceremony together. Afterwards, there is space to have something light to eat, remain lying down for a while or quietly go to bed.

We remain present until everyone feels settled enough to end the evening.

After the ceremony weekend

Ayahuasca aftercare & integration

What you experience during a ceremony does not simply end after the weekend. It can become visible in how you think, feel and respond in daily life.

That is why integration is part of the process.

We offer further support through deepening work with Carlijn and walking sessions with Ramses, creating space to process your experience and support change in daily life.
