Ayahuasca is a psychoactive plant medicine traditionally originating from the Amazon region. It is used in ceremonies for self-awareness, self-exploration and emotional processing. The experience can be intense and requires careful preparation, professional guidance and attention to safety.
Ayahuasca is a tea made from two types of plants. One plant contains DMT. Because DMT is normally broken down by the body when taken orally, a second plant with MAO-inhibiting properties is needed. This combination allows the effects of DMT to become active.
Traditional ayahuasca often consists of Banisteriopsis caapi combined with a DMT-containing plant such as Chacruna. Other plants, such as Peganum harmala combined with Jurema, are also used and have similar effects.
Ayahuasca can be seen as opening the door to our inner world. Emotions, memories and old patterns may become more strongly felt. Experiences that have been suppressed or avoided for a long time can come back into awareness.
The experience can be confronting, but also clarifying and enriching. Many people describe ayahuasca as insightful, enriching and inspiring. It can help them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and reconnect with a sense of meaning and direction in life.
For many people, ayahuasca feels like a deep and honest process that creates space to encounter themselves in a different way.
Conventional therapy often works through conversation and analysis. During ayahuasca, many people experience less control from the thinking mind and more direct contact with what is happening within them.
The difference is that ayahuasca does not work through understanding alone, but primarily through direct experience and feeling. This can create not only insight, but also space to genuinely process experiences.
Ayahuasca may be suitable when you feel a genuine need to understand yourself more deeply.
For example, when:
From visions to emotional breakthroughs
The ayahuasca experience differs from person to person. Some people see images, colours or patterns, while for others the experience is more physical.
Unresolved emotions and memories may also come to the surface. Allowing these experiences to be felt can lead to crying, relief or a deep sense of gratitude.
Physical reactions such as nausea or vomiting may also occur. These are often experienced as a form of release, where tension is discharged and a stronger connection with yourself can emerge.
Spiritual experiences
During ayahuasca, some people experience a deep sense of connection. This can bring calm, trust and a different perspective on life.
Some experience this as something sacred, while others understand it more as a profound psychological insight.
It is not about what you believe, but about what you experience yourself and the meaning it holds for you.
Early experiences and birth
The period surrounding pregnancy and birth can influence how you feel and respond later in life, even before words or conscious memories were formed.
During a ceremony, feelings or experiences connected to this early period may become accessible. What emerges can be related to themes such as safety, control, attachment and trust.
Alongside honest and compassionate lessons, ayahuasca can also confront us with what we would rather not feel. Fear, grief or suppressed experiences may become strongly felt.
Ayahuasca is therefore not suitable:
A honest question many people have.
Since 2019, the use of ayahuasca has not been permitted in the Netherlands due to the presence of DMT, a substance regulated under the Dutch Opium Act. The plants traditionally used in ayahuasca also contain MAO inhibitors, which are not prohibited.
At the same time, research into psychedelics and their potential beneficial and therapeutic effects is growing worldwide, including research conducted by Dutch universities.

Within the Netherlands, there are facilitators and organisations that offer ceremonies with careful attention to preparation and safety. Participation takes place on the participant’s own responsibility and following an intake procedure focused on suitability.
Ayahuasca is not suitable for everyone and requires careful consideration and screening.

Good preparation can help you enter the process with greater calm and awareness. Preparation is important not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
